I’m not crazy, I’m human — mental health for black men

Photo by Ketut Subiyanto from Pexels

2020 came and with it, a big slap of “you ain’t shit!” flooded in our minds as we sat still in isolation.

The conversation surrounding mental health is never an easy one. This is especially true amongst black men. There seems to be some sort of unwritten rule that a black man that is vocal about their feelings is weak.

For as long as I can remember I have always had the impression that I can handle anything. I lived through situations whereby in my eyes, things could not possibly get any worse. Whatever else comes my way I could…

It is important to remember that you will die

Photo by Annie Spratt on Unsplash

It is no secret that I am not immortal, at any minute I could take my last gasp of air never to breathe again.

Sometimes I wonder what is going to kill me. Will I die by accident, plane crash maybe, or will a foreign bullet greet me in the head at the parking lot on my way to get some groceries? Maybe a terminal illness like Cancer, Heart Disease, or even Alzheimer’s? The point is that I know that at some point I will die. And so will you.

As dreadful as it is, death gives life meaning, without…

A philosophy for direction

Photo by Jametlene Reskp on Unsplash

As a pilot, I have been taught the importance of being able to navigate the skies. Knowing where you are at all times and being certain of your direction is synonymous with the job title. To find my purpose, I understand that like an airplane, I have to follow a system for navigating and identifying my position at all times. The values I have set for myself are the compass that directs my path, I have to be willing to trust the process and to submit without compromise.

When faced with an opportunity for instant gratification, we tend to neglect…

Inside a broken home

“I thought I’d lost myself but in reality, there was no me. All these years I’ve been running and trying to escape from the girl who never was there!” — Anonymous

One of my biggest interests is building a connection with people from all walks of life. Behind every person, there is a story and through conversation, you can learn a lot about anyone if you are willing to listen.

I have a friend that approached me to tell her story. She asked to remain anonymous because of the sensitivity of the subject matter, we both agree that her story…

Know Your Worth

Photo by Oladimeji Odunsi on Unsplash

Before slavery and colonialism, there was Africa, the wealthiest continent on the face of the earth. Inhabited by beautiful people and thriving civilizations, Africa became the subject of envy to the western world. This is where I am from, the birthplace of my ancestors. The land from whose soil my skin is shaded, therein lies the deep roots to my pride.

Dear black child, it is important to realize that the oppression you face today is not a consequence of your deeds, but an evil injustice against your being. The land of your forefathers was intruded upon, by evil man…

Philosophy on life

Photo by Joshua Earle on Unsplash

Denzel Washington, one of my favorite actors was asked in an interview, “If you could go back in time and change anything, what would that be?” His response was very brief and delivered in the cool and charismatic tone because he is Denzel after all.

“I wouldn’t change anything, because everything I have done throughout my life has made me the man I am today.” — Denzel Washington

Although the response was brief, the message I got was extensive. In order to be at peace with your past, you have to be content with who you are right now. As…

I’m just not into you

Photo by Álvaro Serrano on Unsplash

Dear “insert name here,” it’s not me, it’s you. You do not tickle my fancy, you do not occupy the tiniest bit of my heart. Honestly, there is not much you can do about it, I think it’s best you just let it go. This has been dragging on for too long now and honestly, it’s about time I set the record straight, the least you deserve is complete transparency. I’m in love with your sister!

I‘m not going to say too much about her because we both know she’s perfect. After all, I’m not an asshole so I won’t…

The journey from a small African village to the skies

As far back as I can recall, I’ve always had a fascination for human flight. For as long as I can remember my sights have been set on understanding the physics behind it and eventually conquering it. I remember the first time I watched Superman and the fuss I made while insisting that my parents buy me the suit. To me, that was the key to manned flight because even to this day I haven’t seen Superman take off without his suit.

Where I’m from, we aren’t exposed to much, a consequence of the fact is that we lack opportunity…

n’. Having great interest of what is new

Photo by Elina Krima / Pexels

Throughout my life I have been exposed to a diversity of possibilities, I frequently take inspiration from various sources and foresee myself at the very top of whatever challenge it is that I am inspired to undertake. My problem is that I do not discriminate, by so saying I mean that I absorb it all. I find a task and for a limited time it is all that my mind can think of, I am extremely inspired for a while, but in the midst of it all, my brain goes idle.

I tend to forget easily why it is that…
